Terry Stout Anderson has taught middle and high school English for 30 years in Michigan, California, and New York. She currently serves as District Coordinator for Secondary English for the Ann Arbor (Michigan) Public Schools.
In this teacher chat, Terry sat down with Everyday Advocacy’s Cathy Fleischer to share her journey toward creating an updated text recommendation process for her district, a particularly important proactive strategy in a time of book challenges.
“There are more people on your side than you think. . . I have found people want to support the good work of teachers. It’s figuring out that puzzle. . . that way in to work within the system.”
You can read more about this process in “Fighting the Good Fight: A Journey Toward Advocacy,” a piece Terry wrote for the California English Journal. You can also see the text recommendation process that the English department is now using.
