Going to NCTE Convention this month?
If so, we hope you’ll join us for a session on Everyday Advocacy called, Banned Not Broken: Navigating the Challenges of Book Censorship in Schools.
We’ll join forces with Sabrina Baeta (program manager of PEN America’s Freedom to Read) and Ellen Hopkins (one of the most banned authors in the country) and use the framework of Everyday Advocacy to help teachers learn ways to change the public narrative about book banning in their local contexts, as part of their everyday lives as teachers.
Sabrina will offer a research perspective: sharing the most recent PEN report about book banning in America.
Ellen will offer an author perspective: sharing the narrative of a moment when she learned her books made a difference in the life of a young reader.
Jennifer Buehler and Cathy Fleischer, from the Everyday Advocacy Team, will offer an advocacy perspective: immersing teachers in the EA Framework, focusing on how teachers can use both PEN’s research and Ellen’s story to
become more knowledgeable about the issues underlying bans;
find allies among parents, students, and community members to support this work; and
create proactive tactics that you can use in your own context to protect students’ freedom to read.
Saturday, November 23, 2:45 – 4:00 pm
Meeting Level 2, Rm. 204B
Looking forward to seeing you there!
