Barbara McKinnon: Help Students Become Better Citizens

think-long-term_-celebrate-short-termBarbara McKinnon’s long term goal is to shift  the conversation in her elementary school from an overwhelming focus on test scores to a consideration of how to help students become better citizens who exhibit traits like persistence, responsibility, flexibility, curiosity, openness, engagement, and creativity.  She has set a short-term goal of having her students identify, cultivate and monitor their own development of these qualities and getting parent buy-in to help monitor and develop these skills outside of school.  As an intermediate goal, she plans to develop allies by sharing what she learns about this process with teammates and other colleagues, hoping to get more teachers on board with message that we are responsible for more than test scores.
